The increased complexity and importance of the international investment framework has not, to date, been met with the requisite increased capacity of developing countries to negotiate, renegotiate and assess the agreements or to fully appreciate their implications.
There is a paramount need to increase the capacity of developing countries’ governments in the field of international investment law to understand the implications of investment agreements, treaties and contracts, and the disputes initiated thereunder, including their consequences for government policy space and the public purse. Building on more than 15 years of expertise on investment and sustainable development, IISD designs and carries out training courses for developing country governments to develop their policies on investment treaties in ways that fulfill their sustainable development goals and limit negative impacts of international investment treaties on governmental law and policy-making.
