Adaptive Monitoring on the Winnipeg River
IISD and Aquatic Life® have partnered in a pilot project of adaptive monitoring in the Winnipeg River basin, to deploy high-frequency sensors that deliver data in near real-time.
The Adaptive Monitoring on the Winnipeg River project is a collaboration between IISD and Aquatic Life ® to explore the use of high-frequency sensors that deliver data in near real-time via satellites and mobile data networks to better understand freshwater. Our project goals are to explore whether these systems can improve a shared understanding of the state of the river, develop surrogate models and near-term forecasting, and use spectral fingerprints to isolate phosphorus and nitrogen. In this project update brief, we outline our project progress to date, which includes the deployment of sensors in the Pinawa Marina and at the Powerview-Pine Falls Drinking Water Treatment Facility, and our next steps! We welcome collaborators in the public, private, and non-governmental organization sectors to explore how high-frequency water data can improve understanding, accelerate action, and build trust in the Winnipeg River basin.
