Border Carbon Adjustment Mechanisms: Policy updates and potential orientation responses for Viet Nam in the context of increasing global trade tensions
Designed for policy-makers and industry leaders in Viet Nam, this workshop aimed to raise awareness of the growing number of global BCAs and strategies to adapt to them. Participants explored recent developments and their implications for Vietnamese businesses, including the effects of domestic carbon pricing on industry competitiveness.
About the Event
Border carbon adjustments (BCAs) are becoming an increasingly prominent topic in global trade. As more countries introduce BCA mechanisms, governments and industries need to adapt to this new reality to safeguard domestic competitiveness.
In partnership with the Foreign Trade University, IISD hosted a half-day workshop in Ha Noi, Viet Nam, offering a practical overview of global BCA developments and what they mean for Vietnamese businesses. The event also examined how domestic carbon pricing interacts with BCAs, affecting the competitiveness of emissions-intensive, trade-exposed sectors.
During the workshop, participants:
- Gained an understanding of BCAs and how domestic carbon pricing interacts with BCA mechanisms.
- Received updates on the European Union Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and developments in other jurisdictions, including the United Kingdom, Australia, and Chinese Taipei.
- Explored competitiveness challenges and discussed Viet Nam’s potential policy responses.
- Identified opportunities and follow-up actions for both government and industry stakeholders.
