When you donate publicly traded securities, such as stocks and mutual funds, you eliminate the capital gains tax that you would have to pay if you sold the securities and then donated the proceeds. You will also receive a charitable tax receipt for the fair market value (the closing price on the date the donation was received) for your donation.
